Originally built as a cathedral by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in 537 AD, it was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly 1,000 years. The Hagia Sophia served as the Eastern Orthodox Cathedral of Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) and the seat of the Patriarch of Constantinople until 1453.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, Sultan Mehmed II converted the Hagia Sophia into a mosque. This transformation included the addition of Islamic features, such as minarets, mihrab, and minbar, while preserving its Christian mosaics and artwork.
