The severe, abstract shape of this piece is related to the monumental forms of the Empire style which dominated design throughout Europe in the first 20 years of the 19th century. However, the oval shape is one of the more fanciful shapes, such as lyres and globes, which were favoured for secretaires in Vienna in the succeeding decade and which became a mark of the emerging Biedermeier style. The carefully matched veneers, the sparse, gilded mounts and the penwork that decorates the interior of the secretaire, were all typical of Biedermeier design. The dated drawer also carries the signature of the cabinet-maker Franz Steindl. He worked in Budapest from the 1820s, but the shape of the secretaire suggests that Steindl may have learnt his skills in Vienna at least seven years earlier.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Victoria and Albert Museum (often abbreviated as the V\u0026amp;A) in London is the world's largest museum of applied arts, decorative arts, and design, housing a permanent collection of over 2.27 million objects, founded in 1852 and named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe V\u0026amp;A is located in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, in an area known as \"Albertopolis\" because of its association with Prince Albert, the Albert Memorial and the major cultural institutions with which he was associated. These include the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, the Royal Albert Hall and Imperial College London. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat is special about exhibition and gallery posters is that they are an affordable way of getting good, unique art on the walls, as although it is not an artists original, neither is it something that has been mass reproduced.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBecause of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the charm. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese posters are sent as unframed. They are delivered in a cardboard-backed envelope for protection.
