Colourful broad dabs of pains make up the landscape of this charming French village.\u003cbr\u003e\nDimensions: 25 in x 25 in (63 cm x 63 cm)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the summer of 1905, Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck and André Derain discovered the village of Collioure, which lies south of Perpignan on the Gulf of Lyon. There they made a number of landscape paintings, including this one, with its view, painted with impulsively placed brush strokes, from a hill overlooking houses in dazzling sunlight on the shores of a deep-blue Mediterranean. Influenced by Vincent van Gogh's painting and the Pointillists who succeeded him, Derain and his fellow artists liberated themselves from the Post-Impressionist tastes that still ruled Paris. The painters, branded 'Fauves' – in English 'wild animals' – by the critics, developed a new style which was, for a short time, very influential, especially in Germany.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe Blue Rider was a designation by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc for their exhibition and publication activities, in which both artists acted as sole editors in the almanac of the same name, first published in mid-May 1912. The editorial team organized two exhibitions in Munich in 1911 and 1912 to demonstrate their art-theoretical ideas based on the works of art exhibited. Traveling exhibitions in German and other European cities followed. The Blue Rider disbanded at the start of World War I in 1914.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat is special about exhibition and gallery posters is that they are an affordable way of getting good, unique art on the walls, as although it is not an artists original, neither is it something that has been mass reproduced.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBecause of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats.
