1996 Edvard Munch Poster, Red Virginia Creeper 1899, Munch Museet, Norway, Expressionism, Symbolism, gallery exhibition, wall art decor
This original Edvard Munch exhibition poster is from the Munch Museet in Oslo, Norway, for a 1996 exhibition featuring "The Virgin Red Vine" from 1899-1900. At the time he painted this picture Munch was having his affair with Tulla Larsen but dreaded the entanglement of marriage (jealousy of her other lovers may have been one of the reasons). The plant encircling the house is a Virginia creeper.
Dimensions: 18 in x 18 in (46 cm x 46 cm)
Jealousy is a painting by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. Munch returned to this image throughout his whole life - he completed no less than 11 painted versions of Jealousy. The first painting was executed in 1895, and the last was made during the 1930s. Munch also created four lithograph versions and one drypoint of Jealousy.
Red Virginia Creeper has an initially appearing an idealised scene, with its central home appealingly large and disarmingly bright, enlivened further by being coated in the eponymous red creeper plant. Amid the grass lies a well-trodden path surrounded by white picket fences.
Yet Edvard Munch's idiosyncratic discomfort becomes apparent and strikes the eye and mind with a sense of discontent. The figure in the foreground, presented from above the neck only with huge and staring eyes, is wild-eyed and confused, as he departs the scene. His green visage contrasts with the vibrant reds and white elsewhere in the piece, as he does from the seemingly-happy setting which he appears to wish to flee.
Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream, has become one of the iconic images of world art. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'). From this emerged his distinctive style.
What is special about exhibition and gallery posters is that they are an affordable way of getting good, unique art on the walls, as although it is not an artists original, neither is it something that has been mass reproduced.
Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the charm.
These posters are sent as unframed. They are delivered in a cardboard tube for protection.
