An original 1964 Air France travel poster promoting the Caribbean Islands, designed by Jacques Nathan-Garamond. Two colourful hummingbirds appear alongside a large tropical leaf and a conch shell, set against turquoise, orange and green. Its bold shapes and rich colours capture the appeal of a tropical holiday during the 1960s. This German-language edition was printed in France by Perceval, Paris, and comes from an old travel agency collection, where it was stored flat from new.

Jacques Nathan-Garamond (1910–2001) was a French graphic designer who signed many of his posters simply “Nathan”. He worked across advertising, illustration and exhibition design, and helped establish the Alliance Graphique Internationale in 1951. His Caribbean poster shows his skill in turning natural subjects into bold, simplified shapes, with carefully balanced colours that catch the eye from a distance. His work is represented in the Museum of Modern Art’s collection.
Air France is the flag carrier of France headquartered in Tremblay-en-France. Air France was formed on 7 October 1933 from a merger of Air Orient, Air Union, Compagnie Générale Aéropostale, Compagnie Internationale de Navigation Aérienne (CIDNA), and Société Générale de Transport Aérien (SGTA).
Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn or stained. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the vintage charm.
When framed these colourful and detailed posters, with vibrant colours can become a centre piece for any room, to remind us of a simpler time.
