1965 SNCF Cote d'Azur Poster, French Riviera travel poster from Côte d'Azur, by Roger Marcel Limouse, wall art retro decor

This is a beautiful original mid century SNCF French railways poster from the French Riviera by Roger Marcel Limouse, depicting a fleet of colourful sailing boats gliding about the harbour. Although this has some damage, it has a special feel to it.

Roger Marcel Limouse is recognised as the last great painter of ‘Fauvism’ – a movement known for its use of bold colours and simplified form. We can see the influence of this in his painting. The use of bright red in the town is very characteristic of the style too. As well as being a Fauvist, Limouse is also famous for his illustrations of French poet Charles Baudelaire’s work, ‘The Flowers of Evil’ (Les Fleurs du Mal). In 1919, he settled in Paris and married Jeanne Laillard, artist-painter, in 1937. They spent their time between Paris and Morocco – there is the influence of rich Moroccan colours and warm sun in this work.

The French Riviera, known in French as the Côte d'Azur is the Mediterranean coastline of the southeast corner of France. There is no official boundary, but it is considered to be the coastal area of the Alpes-Maritimes department, extending from the rock formation Massif de l'Esterel to Menton, at the France–Italy border, although some other sources place the western boundary further west around Saint-Tropez or even Toulon. The coast is entirely within the Alpes-Maritimes, a department within Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. The Principality of Monaco is a semi-enclave within the region, surrounded on three sides by France and fronting the Mediterranean. The French Riviera contains the seaside resorts of Cap-d'Ail, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, Cannes, and Theoule-sur-Mer.

Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn or stained. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the vintage charm. This poster has been stored folded, so there are crease marks which shouldn't be very noticeable under pressed glass.
