1969 Lord of the Rings Wilderness Poster, by Barbara Remington BRem, J.R.R. Tolkien, Middle Earth, Ballantine fantasy fiction wall art decor

This is a large 1969 triptych poster of J.R.R Tolkien's "Wilderness" by Barbara Remington from the fantasy world of Middle Earth. The artist Barbara Remington (who signed her art as BRem) designed the image as the cover art of three separate book covers run together, hence the three signatures on the bottom of each third. Produced for Ballentine Books in 1965, this edition of Lord of the Rings featured the full image.
If you want a vintage Tolkien Lord of the Rings statement piece for a room, this is the Grandmother version to have. It is interesting to note that the other major artist for Tolkien, his much preferred Pauline Baynes are both women.

Condition: Pinholes, some rough edges, small paper loss bottom right corner, soime light marks but the main part of the poster is in great condition, see photos.

The poster was published in 1969 and sold in book stores for $5. The original painting is in the collection of Marquette University. Barbara Remington painted the image before she had a chance to read the book and as a result, the illustrations may look a little out of place. Tolkien strongly disliked the work. Barbara did read the books after the painting and became a big fan and would have "definitely drawn different pictures" had she read the books first.
These images have come to represent the Lord of the Rings to anyone growing up in the US during the 1960s and her images were on the covers of the millions of paperback books read by teens in the late 20th century.

Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the charm.

When framed these colourful and detailed posters can become a centre piece for any room, to remind us of a simpler time.

These posters are sent as unframed. They will be rolled up and delivered in a cardboard tube for protection.
