A vintage Picasso exhibition poster showing two women running hand in hand beside a brilliant blue sea. Their flowing dresses, windswept hair and exaggerated movements give the image a joyful sense of freedom. Produced for Louisiana Museum’s exhibition of works from the Musée Picasso, Paris, held from 7 March to 21 June 1981.
The artwork is Deux Femmes courant sur la plage (La Course), translated as Two Women Running on the Beach (The Race). Picasso painted it in Dinard, Brittany, during summer 1922, using gouache on plywood.
The composition was enlarged for the stage curtain of the Ballets Russes production Le Train Bleu in 1924.
Dimensions: 18.5 in x 17.5 in (45 cm x 42 cm)

Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish artist who spent much of his working life in France. Although famous for Cubism, he continually changed his approach, working across painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking and theatre design. This image belongs to his neoclassical period, when he explored solid, sculptural figures inspired by ancient art. His involvement with ballet, and his marriage to dancer Olga Khokhlova, also provide a natural context for the women’s energetic, dance-like poses.

What is special about exhibition and gallery posters is that they are an affordable way of getting good, unique art on the walls, as although it is not an artists original, neither is it something that has been mass reproduced.

Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the charm.

These posters are sent as unframed. They are delivered in a cardboard tube for protection.
