This beautiful and colourful Bjorn Wiinblad poster from 1984 is a poster advertisement for a operatic theatre production of The Barber of Baghdad, an opera by Peter Cornelius. It shows the barber shaving the Sultan of Baghdad, atop a colourful and decorated elephant in an arch while courtiers stand in waiting.
The opera was held in the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Bjørn Wiinblad was a Danish painter, designer and artist in ceramics, silver, bronze, textiles, and graphics. His work includes whimsical round-faced people, dressed in vaguely 19th-century costume. They are often surrounded by natural elements: twining vines, floral wreaths, and fantastical trees. When Wiinblad employed color, he did so with great assurance. His colors are saturated and strong—sometimes almost psychedelic—and are often supplemented with metallic gold or silver.

Peter Cornelius was a German composer, writer about music, poet and translator. Der Barbier von Bagdad (The Barber of Baghdad) is a comic opera in two acts by Peter Cornelius to a German libretto by the composer, based on The Tale of the Tailor and The Barber’s Stories of his Six Brothers in One Thousand and One Nights. The first of three operas by Cornelius, the piece was first performed at the Hoftheater in Weimar on 15 December 1858.

Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn or stained. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the vintage charm.
