A colourful 1984 Centre Pompidou museum poster featuring Marc Chagall’s Violet Dancer, a costume design for Igor Stravinsky’s ballet The Firebird. The figure stretches across a soft lilac background, with sweeping black outlines, blue and red details and a striking, mask-like face. Chagall’s name runs along the bottom, with the Paris museum’s lettering down the side.
The image dates from 1945, when Chagall designed scenery and costumes for a New York production of The Firebird. It brings together his love of colour, fantasy and theatrical movement. Chagall created more than 80 costumes for the production, which opened at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House on 24 October 1945. His daughter Ida helped turn the designs into finished costumes.

Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a Jewish artist born in what is now Belarus who spent much of his working life in France. His pictures often combine memories, folklore, music and dreamlike figures in vivid colours. He also designed stained glass, stage scenery and costumes. This dancer shows that theatrical side of his work: the flowing lines suggest how the costume might look in motion.
What is special about exhibition and gallery posters is that they are an affordable way of getting good, unique art on the walls, as although it is not an artists original, neither is it something that has been mass reproduced.
Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the charm.
These posters are sent as unframed. They are delivered in a cardboard tube for protection.
