An original 1986 exhibition poster featuring Marc Chagall’s dreamlike Lovers in Bed. A couple floats above a village beneath a crescent moon, while an artist sits among flowers and imaginary creatures below. Soft blue, green and pink accents bring colour to the delicate black drawing.
Lovers in Bed, circa 1975–1976, an illustration from Celui qui dit les choses sans rien dire—a collaboration between Chagall and poet Louis Aragon. The exhibition title, “À proximité des poètes,” means roughly “Close to the Poets.” It explored Maeght’s publishing relationships with artists and writers.
Produced for the Maeght exhibition at Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum in Aalborg, Denmark.
Printing method: Colour offset printing
Dimensions: 27 in x 19.5 in (69 cm x 48 cm)
Condition: some light marks, see photos.

Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was born into a Jewish family in Vitebsk, in present-day Belarus, and later settled in France. His art blends memories of village life with love, folklore, animals and imaginary scenes. Here, the floating bed and unexpected changes in scale create the feeling of a dream. Poetry was an important part of his working life: he befriended poets in Paris and illustrated numerous books. Maeght became his representative in 1948.

What is special about exhibition and gallery posters is that they are an affordable way of getting good, unique art on the walls, as although it is not an artists original, neither is it something that has been mass reproduced.

Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the charm.

These posters are sent as unframed. They are delivered in a cardboard tube for protection.
