This poster is from from a 1993 collection of Tolkien posters from John Howe who is one of the leading artists in Tolkien artwork. This scene is what Pippen sees when he steals a look at the palantir of Orthanc, the nine nazgul, or ring wraiths coming for Frodo. Barad-dûr ("Dark Fortress") was the Dark Lord Sauron's primary stronghold in Mordor, serving as his base of operations in Middle-earth during the Second Age and late Third Age.

John Howe is best-known for his artwork of J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. Howe illustrated the Lord of the Rings board game created by Reiner Knizia, and re-illustrated the maps of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion in 1996–2003.
