Vintage 1985 Wilhelm Freddie exhibition poster for Galerie Asbæk in Copenhagen, reproducing Skindvesten (“The Leather Waistcoat”), painted in 1984. A seated female figure appears against a dramatic blue background, with pink curves, a bright yellow shape and unusual geometric details. A striking example of Danish surrealism, with a spacious white border and bold gallery lettering.
Dimensions: 39.5 in x 26 in (100 cm x 66 cm)

Wilhelm Freddie (1909–1995) was a Danish painter and a leading figure in Danish surrealism. He made dreamlike, sometimes unsettling pictures that challenged conventional ideas about the body, sexuality and respectable behaviour. His early work caused considerable controversy: police confiscated works in 1937, and he served a short prison sentence. By the period of this painting, his imagery had become simpler, combining female figures with flat colours and geometric forms—clearly visible here.

What is special about exhibition and gallery posters is that they are an affordable way of getting good, unique art on the walls, as although it is not an artists original, neither is it something that has been mass reproduced.

Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the charm.

These posters are sent as unframed. They are delivered in a cardboard-backed envelope for protection. They have been stored folded.
