This poster "Maglor casts a Silmaril into the sea" is from a 1998 collection of from Tolkien artist Ted Nasmith. Nasmith was asked by Tolkien's publishers to provide the artwork for the first illustrated edition of The Silmarillion in 1996.

6. Maglor casts a Silmaril into the sea
"And it is told of Maglor that he could not endure the pain with which the Silmaril tormented him; and he cast it at last into the Sea, and thereafter he wandered ever upon the shores, singing in pain and regret beside the waves."

The sea is a recurring them in The Silmarillion, and with Maglor casts a Silmaril into the sea, Nasmith wanted to present a moment of resolution against a backdrop of twilight over a restive ocean. Its simplicity is intended to belie the terrible legacy the final casting of one of the jewles into the sea represents.
