Gilbert & George began working together after meeting at St Martins School of Art in London in 1967. They became known as “living sculptures”, making their shared identity part of their art. Drawing heavily on everyday life in East London, their work tackles sex, religion, prejudice and social rules through bold images and confrontational language. The Banners reduces that approach to handwritten-looking slogans in red and black.

Original exhibition poster from Gilbert & George’s The Banners, White Cube Bermondsey, 2015–16. The artists’ deliberately provocative slogans explore authority, belief, sexuality and social conventions. Some designs contain strong language or explicit sexual references.

Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn or stained. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the vintage charm.

These posters are sent as unframed. They will be delivered in a cardboard tube for protection.
