Circa 1956 Flims Ski Poster by Celestino Piatti – Vintage Swiss Sun Skier

A colourful vintage travel poster advertising winter holidays in Flims, in Switzerland’s Graubünden region. Piatti turns the sun into a playful skier, complete with a pointed white hat, red body and slender ski poles. Bright yellow and red stand out against a deep blue background, while the oversized “Flims” lettering follows the slope beneath the skis.
The German wording translates as “Ice, snow, sun, entertainment – Graubünden, Switzerland.” It neatly captures the promise of an Alpine holiday: good snow, sunshine and things to do after skiing.

Flims is a premier Swiss winter sports destination known for its expansive ski terrain, sunny slopes, and vibrant alpine culture. Designed by renowned Swiss artist Celestino Piatti, this striking mid-century modern poster uses geometric shapes to depict a stylized skier wearing a starburst-like sun mask or hat, perfectly capturing the joyful, sunny spirit of winter holidays in Graubünden.

Celestino Piatti (1922–2007) was a Swiss graphic designer and illustrator known for bold colours, expressive characters and pictures that communicate an idea immediately. He designed more than 6,000 book covers for the German publisher dtv, alongside advertising posters and children’s books. This Flims design shows his playful approach particularly well: sunshine and skiing become one memorable character.

Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn or stained. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the vintage charm.
