Eurovision Song Contest Rotterdam 2020 poster featuring the colourful “Open Up” identity against a deep blue background. It lists the planned semi-finals on 12 and 14 May and the grand final on 16 May 2020. The contest was cancelled before these performances could take place, making the design a reminder of the Eurovision that never happened.
The EBU announced the cancellation on 18 March 2020. It was the first cancellation in Eurovision’s history, following an uninterrupted run since 1956. Rotterdam subsequently hosted the 2021 contest.
The central design has a meaning: its coloured segments represent the flags of the 41 intended participating countries, arranged in the order they first entered Eurovision.
Dimensions: 23 in x 16.5 in (59 cm x 42 cm)
CLEVER FRANKE is a Dutch design studio founded in 2008 by Thomas Clever and Gert Franke. Its work combines graphic design with information and technology. For Eurovision 2020, the studio turned the history of participating countries into the circular flag design, giving the bright shapes a story beyond decoration. The studio also developed a related identity for the 2021 contest.
Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn or stained. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the vintage charm.
These posters cardboard backed envelope for protection.
