This hand signed poster is from from a 1999 collection of Tolkien posters from John Howe who is one of the leading artists in Tolkien artwork. This scene shows the dragons, balrogs and orcs that were sent to attack the city of Gondolin. The battle was between the forces of Gondolin under King Turgon and Morgoth, after Maeglin had betrayed the city's hidden location to the enemy. This battle took the lives of most of the Gondolindrim, and of Turgon and his captains. However, some few managed to escape the through a secret passage, notably Tuor, Idril, and their son Eärendil.

4. The Fall of Gondolin - The Simarillion
"At last, in the year when Earandil was seven years old, Morgoth was ready, and he loosed upon Gondolin his Balrogs, and his Orcs, and his wolves; and with them came the dragons of trhe brood of Glaurung, and they were now many and terrible. The host of Morgoth came over the northern hills where the height was greatest and the watch the least vigilant, and it came at night upon a time of festival, when all the people of Gondolin were upon the walls to await the rising sun, and sing their songs at its uplifting; for the morrow was the great feast they they named the Gates of Summer."
John Howe and Alan Lee were the leading designers in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy set of movies from Peter Jackson. You can see that these earlier posters show a strong resemblence to those later films, his influence is undeniable.
John Howe is best-known for his artwork of J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. Howe and Tolkien artist Alan Lee served as chief conceptual designers for Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Howe illustrated the Lord of the Rings board game created by Reiner Knizia, and re-illustrated the maps of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion in 1996–2003.
For The Hobbit films, original director Guillermo del Toro and replacement director Peter Jackson consulted with both Howe and fellow conceptual artist Alan Lee to ensure continuity of design.
