This hand signed poster is from from a 1999 collection of Tolkien posters from John Howe who is one of the leading artists in Tolkien artwork. This scene is what Pippen sees when he steals a look at the palantir of Orthanc, the nine nazgul, or ring wraiths coming for Frodo. Barad-dûr ("Dark Fortress") was the Dark Lord Sauron's primary stronghold in Mordor, serving as his base of operations in Middle-earth during the Second Age and late Third Age.

2. The Dark Tower - The Two Towers
"In a low hesitating voice Pippen began again, and slowly his words grew stronger and clearer. "I saw a dark sky, and tall battlements," he said. "And tiny stars. It seemed very far away and long ago, yet hard and clear. Then the stars went in and out - they were cut off by things with wings. Very big, I think, really; but in the glass they looked like bats wheeling round the tower. I thought there were nine of them. One began to fly straight towards me, getting bigger and bigger...""

John Howe and Alan Lee were the leading designers in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy set of movies from Peter Jackson. You can see that these earlier posters show a strong resemblence to those later films, his influence is undeniable.

John Howe is best-known for his artwork of J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. Howe and Tolkien artist Alan Lee served as chief conceptual designers for Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Howe illustrated the Lord of the Rings board game created by Reiner Knizia, and re-illustrated the maps of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion in 1996–2003.

For The Hobbit films, original director Guillermo del Toro and replacement director Peter Jackson consulted with both Howe and fellow conceptual artist Alan Lee to ensure continuity of design.
