A Guggenheim Museum collection poster reproducing Marc Chagall’s Green Violinist (Violiniste), painted in 1923–24. A green-faced musician in a purple coat towers above village rooftops, while another figure floats overhead. The gold-coloured border gives this edition a particularly decorative finish.

The painting draws on Chagall’s memories of Jewish life around Vitebsk, now in Belarus. Fiddlers played an important part in celebrations, and music and dance had spiritual significance in the Hasidic community of his childhood. The enormous musician brings those memories into a dreamlike village scene.

Printing method: Colour offset lithography printing
Dimensions: 35 in x 19.5 in (89 cm x 48 cm)

Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a Jewish artist born near Vitebsk who spent much of his working life in France. His paintings combine memories of village life with brilliant colours, floating figures, animals and musicians. Here, the angular purple clothing shows his interest in modern painting, while the fiddler and village preserve a strong connection to his childhood. He also designed stained glass, theatre scenery and the celebrated Paris Opera ceiling. The poster’s credited designer, Massimo Vignelli, also created the Guggenheim’s visual identity for its 1992 reopening.

What is special about exhibition and gallery posters is that they are an affordable way of getting good, unique art on the walls, as although it is not an artists original, neither is it something that has been mass reproduced.

Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the charm.

These posters are sent as unframed. They are delivered in a cardboard tube for protection.
