Syria Temple of Bal Travel Poster, Baal Palmyra , Excursions in the Orient, Reprint, travel and tourism advertising, wall art decor 1990s
This is a "Excursions in the Orient" poster reprint of The Temple of Bel (Baal) in Palmyra, Syria. It is part of a portfolio of exotic travel posters from the mysterious Orient encouraging Europeans to visit or settle in the Middle East.
Dimensions: 15.7 in x 11.8 in (40 cm x 30 cm)
Since Napolean's campaigns in Egypt and Syria in the late 18C, the Orient had been coveted terrain for European powers seeking to expand their power base in the Mediterranean Sea and by the 19C had become a popular destination for tourism, travel and pilgrimage.
French tourism companies started issuing posters promoting tourism in the neely colonised lands in bright colours and stark contrasts underscoring the romantisim of the locales and are part of the Orientalist movement.
They're an expression of the European mindset that described the Orient as a mysterious and fantastic realm, far from the antithesis of drudgery of Europe.
These posters are sent as unframed. They will be delivered in a cardboard tube for protection.
